In 1950, the club was organized as the Howard University Alumni Club of the District of Columbia, and in the late 1990’s the name was changed to the Howard University Alumni Club of Greater Washington, DC.

Our mission is to inspire and engage alumni to cultivate a lifetime of loyalty, commitment, and service to Howard University, the Capstone of higher education.
Our guiding principles are S3, which are Spirit, Service, and Scholarship, where Spirit is always to carry the school spirit of Howard University wherever we go and let our Howard Pride manifest itself through our walk and talk as we lead others.  Service is to always give of ourselves, our gifts and talents, time, and finances to the university, students, alumni, and community, and Scholarship – to always promote, encourage, cultivate and support the scholarly pursuit of academic success at Howard university.

Our four goals are to can be summed up in four power words “engagement”, “Students”, “Sustainability”, and “Marketing”. Engagement- Develop and implement an array of rewarding programs and activities that increase overall alumni engagement and giving to the university. Students - Cultivate a relationship between students and alumni through consistent engagement. Sustainability--Partner with University and Community entities to generate revenue to support the sustainability of the alumni club & the university. And Marketing - Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing strategy that increases our visibility, partnerships, and memberships on campus, with the community and the surrounding area

The club has 19 committees, five of the newest ones are the Oratorical Contest, the Harlem Fine Arts, Embassy Educational Tour & Reception, Small Business Enterprise, and the Sunshine Committee.  Some of our events have been the Backpacks 2 Briefcase Mentorship Program, the Embassy of Haiti Educational Tour and Reception, the Small Business Enterprise Program, the Oratorical Student Contest, and the Red, White, and Bleed Blue Summer Freshmen Sendoff. We have also given out over thousands of dollars over the years in scholarships to deserving Howard Students
